It takes a whole-person approach to prevent osteoporosis including getting enough dietary calcium and vitamin D, participating in regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol. If you have been diagnosed with low bone mass (osteopenia) or had a fracture from a fall at a standing height, it is also important to consider other conditions you may have that are strongly associated with osteoporosis. For example, if you experience premature menopause, diabetes, cancer treatment, or disorders requiring glucocorticoid (steroid) medications, your healthcare provider might discuss osteoporosis medications to prevent further bone loss leading to osteoporosis.
